GELATIN RELIEF
Gelatin Relief is the latest offering from Halo Photographic.
Each image created using this process is a one of a kind work of
art, made in the darkroom by hand from your wedding and portrait
photos.
The technique of gelatin relief is a relatively new photographic
process. Though gelatin relief can be considered alternative, it
is based on the fundamentals of black and white printmaking.
To implement the process, a regular silver gelatin print made
on photo paper is bleached in a corrosive acidic solution, and
is then washed and redeveloped in a variety of developers and /
or toners. During the bleaching process, the darker areas of the
print lift, forming veils, which can be wiped away or incorporated
into the design at hand. Color of the finished print depends on
many factors, including the redeveloping solution and oxidation
rate of the print.
While it is possible to replicate a primary design, no two gelatin
relief prints are exactly alike. Because the process involves too
many variables that alter the final outcome of the print, each
is a unique, one of a kind piece of art.
Erin Antognoli, owner and head photographer of Halo Photographic,
is one of the few artists in the world who is proficient at this
alternative photographic process. She is very excited to now offer
this exclusive print finishing service to her wedding and portrait
clients.
